 | Vanilla Sky (Cameron Crowe, 2001) 9pm, More 4 This lesser remake of Alejandro Amenabar's disquieting psychological thriller, Open Your Eyes, stars Tom Cruise as a complacent playboy who is horribly disfigured in a car accident caused by a jealous girlfriend (Cameron Diaz), and then experiences all sorts of weird hallucinatory traumas. This being Hollywood, even with the scars Tom is pretty cute; and his then girlfriend, Penélope Cruz, reprises her role in the original as the hero's true love. Ravenous (Antonia Bird, 1999) 10pm, Sky Movies Indie A hilarious, blood-boltered gothic western in which a small band of soldiers at a remote, snowbound army outpost in the high Nevadas, circa 1847, are picked off by Robert Carlyle's demonic Colqhoun, a rabid cannibal who would eat Hannibal Lecter for breakfast. Guy Pearce is the horrified Captain Boyd, headed for a final showdown. Black Book (Paul Verhoeven, 2006) 11.10pm, Film4 Moving back to Holland after his Hollywood adventures, Verhoeven delivers a rousing, old-fashioned tale of wartime derring-do about the Dutch resistance. Carice van Houten stars as a young Jewish woman who infiltrates the Nazis by becoming the mistress of an officer; it's a convincing recreation of the era, high on suspense and bloody action. © Guardian News & Media Limited 2008 | Use of this content is subject to our | (read more)
