Paul Howlett's TV film picks: Rendition | Total Recall | The Page Turner

Rendition (Gavin Hood, 2007) 8pm, Sky Movies Drama A gripping attempt to address the stain on the west that is extraordinary rendition. Anwar El-Ibrahimi is the Egyptian-born US resident arrested on suspicion of terrorism and flown to north Africa, where he suffers, among other brutalities, waterboarding. While his wife (Reese Witherspoon) tries to trace him, the moral debate oscillates between Meryl Streep's icy CIA chief and Jake Gyllenhaal's sickened agent. Total Recall (Paul Verhoeven, 1990) 12.50am, ITV2 In a spectacular, mega-budget sci-fi adventure adapted from a mind-bending Philip K Dick tale, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays an ostensibly ordinary (though very large) labourer who slowly recalls he was once a secret agent; powerful corporate forces have been messing with his mind. Cue dizzying paranoid delusions and state-of-the-art violence. The Page Turner (Denis Dercourt, 2006) 2.40pm & 3.30am, Sky Movies Indie This cool, clever French revenge-thriller stars Déborah François as a young woman charming her way into the chateau of lawyer Pascal Greggory and his concert-pianist wife, Catherine Frot - with whom she has a 10-year-old score to settle. Low-key and gripping, this is a real treat, with an icily controlled performance from François. TV pick of the week Television (read more)
