| IGN recently visited the production offices of Walt Disney Animation Studios and saw footage from their upcoming film Bolt. It remains to be seen how well the movie works as a whole, but what the filmmakers emphasized most was their interest in lending not only the film, but the medium itself new levels of dimensionality and visual poetry. And while I couldn't help wondering precisely why all of these little painterly details mattered in the grand scheme of telling a compelling story, I appreciated them much more after watching another new animated film, Igor. Directed by Anthony Leondis (Lilo & Stitch 2), Igor is filled with images that evokes animated predecessors like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monsters Inc. and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, but its cliché-laden characters and mediocre animation do little to further the artistic evolution of the medium, or even manage to tell a story that anyone other than the makers themselves will care about.
