Igor Review

IGN recently visited the production offices of Walt Disney Animation Studios and saw footage from their upcoming film Bolt. It remains to be seen how well the movie works as a whole, but what the filmmakers emphasized most was their interest in lending not only the film, but the medium itself new levels of dimensionality and visual poetry. And while I couldn't help wondering precisely why all of these little painterly details mattered in the grand scheme of telling a compelling story, I appreciated them much more after watching another new animated film, Igor. Directed by Anthony Leondis (Lilo & Stitch 2), Igor is filled with images that evokes animated predecessors like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monsters Inc. and Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, but its cliché-laden characters and mediocre animation do little to further the artistic evolution of the medium, or even manage to tell a story that anyone other than the makers themselves will care about.
