Film review: Pride and Glory

Written, directed and largely performed by Irish-Americans, Gavin O'Connor's Pride and Glory is a gritty New York cop movie of the sort associated with Sidney Lumet, and turns on an Irish-American police family involved in a corruption scandal exposed when four cops are murdered in Brooklyn just before Christmas. Jon Voight is a drunken senior officer who's spent his life covering up to protect the good name of New York's finest. His elder son is boss of the precinct from which the bent dead cops came, his younger son (Edward Norton) heads the inquiry, and their brother-in-law (Colin Farrell) is a deeply implicated uniformed sergeant. The first hour works well, but the film tails off badly and, faced with four possible endings, the producers decide to use them all.
