Film preview: Cinecity: The Brighton Film Festival, Brighton

Bookended by Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Gus Van Sant's Milk, this seaside festival includes anticipated future releases such as Hamlet 2, The Disappeared, The Class and Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr Hunter S Thompson. It's a solid lineup, but where this festival makes its own stamp is in the smaller mini-festivals and more specialised events contained within. The Quay Brothers display an "inventorium" of their props and sets as well as their films. There's a healthy and artistic look at animation, with Lotte Reiniger's 1926 silhouette film, Adventures Of Prince Achmed, screened with live dulcimer soundtrack. And there are selections of shorts from Poland's legendary Lodz film school, a Dance For Camera mini-festival, plus exhibitions of truly remarkable Polish movie posters and a look at New European Cinema.
