Film picks: We Own the Night | Thank You for Smoking | 36 Quai des Orfèves

We Own the Night 10am & 10pm, Sky Movies Premiere (James Gray, 2007) This hefty crime thriller brings nothing new to the old two-sides-of-the-law scenario, but a nuggety cast makes it watchable. Joaquin Phoenix is Bobby Green, a nightclub manager in late-80s Brooklyn, living comfortably off the Russian mafiosos who frequent his joint, until his cop-father (Robert Duvall) and cop-brother (Mark Wahlberg) go after the gangsters, forcing him to choose sides. Thank You for Smoking 6.15pm, Sky Movies Drama (Jason Reitman, 2005) This satirical assault on the smoking lobby is lightweight in comparison with Michael Mann's The Insider, but nevertheless makes for a sly comedy. Aaron Eckhart is heartless PR man Nick Naylor, wheeling and dealing to get ciggies back on the cinema screen: fags aren't as bad as your parents tell you, he tells the high-school kids. 36 Quai des Orfèves 1am, BBC4 (Olivier Marchal, 2004) A terrific policier from Marchal, whose former career as a cop explains the gritty authenticity of the action. France's screen legends Daniel Auteuil and Gérard Depardieu go nose-to-nose as Paris detectives competing for the top job in their department by trying to catch a gang of security-van robbers. An atmospheric and riveting thriller. TV pick of the week Television (read more)
