Full Metal Jacket(Film,1987)

With a screenplay by Michael Herr and direction by Stanley Kubrick, you can't go far wrong. The first half, in which Matthew Modine and the other recruits undergo training, is gruelling and harsh, with Private Pyle's lethal breakdown the most memorable scene in the film.
