Drama set in a deeply religious, repressed community in the north of Scotland. Bess McNeil (Emily Watson) is young and nave when she meets and falls in love with a Danish oil- rig worker (Stellan Skarsgard). When Jan breaks his neck aboard the rig, ending their sexual relationship, he urges Bess to take another lover and tell him the details.
