John Woo brought all his Hong Kong martial arts movie knowledge to this film and it positively jumps off the screen. The plot is fairly thin; John Travolta plays air force pilot Major Vic 'Deak' Deakins, Christian Slater his number two Captain Riley Hale. Deakins, a traitor, crashes their Stealth bomber, steals the nuclear warheads and sets off to meet his terrorist masters. Hale follows in pursuit, helped by glamorous park ranger Terry Carmichael and, of course, assumed by the authorities to be in on the plot. Cue car chases, fights on moving trains, gunfights galore and the constant threat of the weapons being exploded en route. Surrendering to the sheer breakneck action of the film makes it one of the better Hollywood blockbusters of its time and Travolta's rehabilitation as an actor wasn't hurt by his amoral villain.

François Ozon's erotic thriller stars Charlotte Rampling as Sarah Morgan, a writer of mystery novels. She's suffering from writer's block, so her publisher John Bosload offers her use of his summer retreat, but the quiet is soon broken when his daughter Julie arrives. Her promiscuous sex life at first appals then intrigues Sarah until one of Julie's conquests is found dead in the pool and the two women, both implicated, must conspire to save themselves, for very different reasons.
